Workers' Party of Turkey (TİP) Chairman Erkan Baş and Party Spokesperson Sera Kadıgil made statements regarding the Court of Cassation 3rd Criminal Chamber's filing of a criminal complaint against the Constitutional Court members who ruled on the rights violation of TİP MP Can Atalay.
"WAVING A FINGER AT PARLIAMENT"
Highlights from Erkan Baş's statements are as follows:
"This decision by the Court of Cassation is null and void. Constitutional Court decisions are final. They bind all authorities and legal entities, period. The 3rd Chamber of the Court of Cassation says, 'We do not comply with the Constitution.' Gentlemen, who are you? The Constitution has been trampled upon. They say Can Atalay's parliamentary membership should be revoked. Oh, really! Do you have any other orders? And before the decision, they are waving a finger at Parliament."
"THIS IS A COUP ATTEMPT AGAINST THE JUDICIARY"
"Constitutional Court members made their decision based on the duty assigned to them by the Constitution and previous rulings. It is clear that they did not have the power that day, but today they feel very powerful.
This is a coup attempt against the judiciary. Will we remain silent against a coup attempt? We state with determination that we will defend the popular will to the end against this coup attempt against the judiciary. The Constitution binds the Court of Cassation and the government just as much as it binds us. If we accept this decision of the Court of Cassation as normal, then whoever has the power from now on will do whatever they want. Turkey has reached this point because of those who said, 'Nothing will happen if the Constitution is violated once.' Fortunately, this has become a situation where a clear stance is being taken.
For concrete steps, every party needs to hold its own internal consultation meeting. What falls to the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) is to stand tall against these centers of power that are waving a finger at it."
"SINCE WHEN HAS DEFENDING THE CONSTITUTION BECOME UN-NATIONAL?"
Sera Kadıgil's statements are as follows:
"For the first time in their 20-year history, they are not even making up an excuse when they fail to comply with the Constitution. Who are you to not comply with Constitutional Court decisions? Since when has defending the Constitution become un-national?"
