The Communist Party of Turkey (TKP) has published an open letter to members of parliament following the submission of the bill regarding the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement, signed between Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan, to the Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM).
In its statement, the party argued that the agreement carries the risk of involving Turkey in the war in Yemen and called on MPs to reject the proposal during the upcoming parliamentary vote.
The TKP's letter asserted that a military partnership with Saudi Arabia is not in the interest of the Turkish people. The statement noted that Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan presented the agreement as "defense cooperation," claiming this was done because it is known that there would be no public approval for a potential conflict.
Use your will to ensure withdrawal from the Mecca Agreement. The AKP government is throwing the country into the fire; do not be a partner to this crime.
The letter warned MPs that if the agreement is ratified, Turkey could be "openly involved" in the ongoing war in Yemen. The TKP stated that such a decision would entail not only political but also historical responsibility.
The statement also referenced Turkey's past participation in the Korean War, drawing attention to the risk of soldiers losing their lives "not for the country's interests, but for the sake of imperialist agendas."
The TKP reiterated its call for MPs to vote against the agreement, stating that at a time when issues such as economic crisis, poverty, corruption, and drugs are on the agenda, Turkey should not be dragged into a "Yemen adventure."
