Turkish Parliament to elect new speaker: Calendar announced

The process for the second-term election of the 28th Legislative Period will begin on May 28, as the term of TBMM Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş is coming to an end.

ELECTION PROCESS BEGINS

Two elections are held for the speakership within one legislative period. The term of the first speaker elected is 2 years, while the term of the speaker elected for the second term continues until the end of that legislative period. Accordingly, the process for the second-term election of the 28th Legislative Period will begin on May 28, which is 10 days before June 7, the date when TBMM Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş's term will expire.

ELECTION TO BE HELD BY SECRET BALLOT

Candidates will be notified to the TBMM Speakership within 5 days starting from May 28. Following this process, the TBMM General Assembly will convene within 5 days to conduct the election by secret ballot.

Due to the Eid al-Adha holiday, the election of the TBMM Speaker is planned to be held on June 3 or 4. In the first and second rounds of the parliamentary speaker election, a two-thirds majority of the total number of members, which is 400 votes, will be required, while an absolute majority of 301 votes will be required in the third round. If an absolute majority cannot be achieved in the third round, a fourth round will be held for the two candidates who received the most votes, and the member who receives the most votes in this round will be elected as the TBMM Speaker.

PARLIAMENTARY SPEAKERS

To date, 30 deputies have served as TBMM Speaker. If someone other than Numan Kurtulmuş is elected for the second term of the 28th Legislative Period, this person will be the 31st TBMM Speaker.

Among the speakers who have served since the first TBMM Speaker and founder of the Republic, Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, Mustafa Abdülhalik Renda served the longest. Renda, who was first elected speaker in 1935, was re-elected consecutively until 1946, serving for 11 years.

The TBMM Speaker who served for the shortest time was İsmet Sezgin, with a tenure of 2 months and 1 week.

Istanbul is the province that has produced the most TBMM Speakers. Ali Fethi Okyar, Kazım Karabekir, Ferruh Bozbeyli, İsmail Kahraman, and Numan Kurtulmuş, whose electoral districts were in Istanbul, have held the office of TBMM Speaker.
