Veteran journalist Doğan Satmış evaluates Bahçeli's 50+1 statement: 'With 4.5 years left for the government, why are these being discussed? An answer must be sought for this'

Following the statements made by AKP Chairman and President Erdoğan the previous day regarding the need to change the 50+1 rule required for the Presidency, there was curious anticipation regarding what ruling partner Devlet Bahçeli would comment.

Yesterday, prominent MHP figures indicated today in their statements to 12punto.com.tr and stated that Bahçeli would make the necessary explanation.

The expected statement from Bahçeli came at today's party group meeting. In his speech, which contained numerous messages between the lines, Bahçeli touched upon the absolute importance of the 50+1 rule. While expressing reproach to the President regarding Sinan Oğan, he emphasized that their alliance would not be broken and that his own party, in particular, would continue to protect it diligently.

Evaluating Bahçeli's speech, journalist Doğan Satmış wrote that the question of why the 50+1 rule has come to the agenda now is the real question that needs to be answered.

Here is Doğan Satmış's assessment

"In my opinion, the ruling power is confused about the 50 plus 1 issue.

For example, Chief Advisor to the President Mehmet Uçum was defending this and accusing those who did not want it of not being on the side of the people.

President Erdoğan said that changing this rate would be appropriate, and while saying this, he stated, "the 50+1 requirement leads political parties down the wrong paths."

I think he is right in this criticism as well.

We all saw that former CHP Chairman Kılıçdaroğlu made certain secret promises.

But now, the MHP Chairman has opposed the change of this rule. All of these are indicators of confusion in the ruling camp.

But in my opinion, the real issue is, while the election has just been held and the government still has 4.5 years ahead of it, why are these being discussed? An answer must be sought for this.

When you think about this question, the local elections to be held in March come to mind. Is the government worried about a decrease in its votes in these local elections and a possible necessity for an early election?

The general situation of Turkey is obvious; the economy has not improved, inflation is going full throttle, there is a fight in the judiciary, there is war in our region. When you think about all these, the words of the late President Süleyman Demirel come to mind:

He used to say, "even 1 day is important in politics."

If even one day is important, it is quite natural for the government not to take the 4.5 years ahead for granted.
