Police block DEM Party protest against trustee appointment
A DEM Party delegation protesting the appointment of a trustee to the Van Metropolitan Municipality faced police obstruction while attempting to make a statement on Cumhuriyet Street. The statement was not permitted, and numerous individuals were detained.
The Ministry of Interior's decision to remove Van Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Abdullah Zeydan from office and appoint Van Governor Ozan Balcı in his place has sparked protests in the city. The DEM Party delegation, wishing to express their reaction to the decision, was blocked by police while attempting to hold a press conference on Cumhuriyet Street. The statement was not permitted, and numerous individuals were detained.
POLICE OBSTRUCTION OF THE DELEGATION
The delegation, which included DEM Party Co-Chairs Abdullah Zeydan and Neslihan Şedal, Group Deputy Chair Gülistan Kılıç Koçyiğit, as well as members of parliament and provincial/district chairs, was stopped by police at Sanat Sokağı. While they were not allowed to make a statement, DEM Party members and citizens in the surrounding area protested the situation with applause and slogans.
DETENTIONS CONTINUED
Koçyiğit, who remained under police blockade, reacted to the intervention by saying, "Chairman Doğan has been detained, and Co-Chair Neslihan has been injured. They are not allowing us to take her to the hospital."
Meanwhile, former Van Metropolitan Municipality Co-Chair Mustafa Avcı was also detained. It was learned that the injured Van Metropolitan Municipality Co-Chair Neslihan Şedal has been taken to the hospital.
