Wave of layoffs at Bayrampaşa Municipality after passing to AKP

Following the arrest of Bayrampaşa Mayor Hasan Mutlu, significant changes have taken place in the municipal administration. After the arrest on September 16, 2025, the CHP candidate had taken office through an election, but this election was annulled by a court decision and renewed. In the renewed election, the AKP candidate İbrahim Akın began his duty as acting mayor.

Immediately upon taking office, allegations surfaced that Akın was firing municipal employees. CHP Bayrampaşa District Chair Alican Çam reacted to the situation, arguing that the practices were unlawful and arbitrary. In a written statement, Çam said, "The lawlessness occurring in our municipality can no longer be hidden. The Acting Mayor, whose duty is temporary and whose authority is limited, is firing employees without providing any justification, disregarding the promise he made that ‘no one will be fired.’"

In his statement, Çam further expressed his reaction by saying, "No one can turn the municipality into a field for personal vendettas by playing with people's labor. Those responsible for these arbitrary practices will be held accountable both legally and before the public. Positions are temporary, justice is inevitable. Our struggle will continue without pause."
