Will Can Atalay be released? TİP delegation and Numan Kurtulmuş meeting concludes

The Constitutional Court had ruled that the stripping of Gezi Park trial prisoner Can Atalay's parliamentary membership was 'null and void'.

Following the Constitutional Court's decision, Atalay's release has once again come to the agenda, and Speaker of the Grand National Assembly Numan Kurtulmuş granted an appointment to Workers' Party of Turkey (TİP) Chairman Erkan Baş.

TİP Chairman Erkan Baş, TİP Spokesperson Serra Kadıgil, and TİP Istanbul MP Ahmet Şık arrived at Parliament to meet with Kurtulmuş. Kurtulmuş did not greet the TİP delegation at the door.

The critical meeting began at 13:00.

Speaking after the meeting, Baş said the following:

"We hope that this process will be implemented as soon as possible. Subsequently, Parliament needs to put this on the agenda with an extraordinary session. MPs from CHP, DEM, Saadet-Gelecek, DEVA, EMEP, and DP have stated that they will support our call for an extraordinary session; signatures have already been collected. Our expectation is for it to convene before August 15.

We are aware of the importance of that day, and we stated that it would not be appropriate while the eyes of the whole world are here.

The Speaker suggested whether the 16th could be a possibility.

We will submit our petition for an extraordinary session tomorrow. We do not find it appropriate for the Constitutional Court's decision to be ignored in the agenda."

Baş also stated that the extraordinary session should take place on August 14, adding, "We have received information that the İYİ Party will not provide signatures but will attend the session."

WHAT HAPPENED?

Following the Constitutional Court's decision, Can Atalay, who is in prison, had stated, "I expect to be released and for my parliamentary status, which I never thought I had lost, to be recognized again."

TİP had applied to the Speaker of the Grand National Assembly with the request that Atalay's parliamentary registration be completed and his personal rights be restored.
