YENİ Party's decision on Parliament opening: No attendance at the reception, no standing for Erdoğan

The Grand National Assembly of Turkey will begin its new legislative year with a special session on Thursday, October 1, following a 50-day break. Ahead of the opening, the protocols and General Assembly stances of the parties represented in Parliament have begun to become clear.

According to the decision taken by the YENİ Party regarding the opening day, Chairman Özgür Özel will not attend the traditional Parliamentary Reception to be held on the evening of October 1. It was reported that the party delegation will also not be present at the evening reception.

YENİ PARTY GROUP WILL NOT STAND

Within the scope of the same decision, it was stated that YENİ Party deputies will not stand during the entry of AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan into the General Assembly hall. The TBMM General Assembly is expected to convene for a special session on Thursday at 14:00.

It was reported that in addition to President Erdoğan, the MHP and DEM Party groups are expected to attend the parliamentary opening reception in full force, and that the CHP is also expected to be represented. With these participants, it is stated that the number of parties represented in Parliament has risen to seven.

AGENDA OF THE NEW TERM

One of the main topics of discussion in the General Assembly during the new legislative term is expected to be the fund crisis. Opposition parties are planning to submit a motion for the investigation of the issue and are calling for the establishment of a joint research committee. On the AKP side, it is assessed that the matter may not be limited to just the fund crisis but could be addressed within a broader framework of investment instruments.

CHP Group Chairman Faik Öztrak stated that the research committee should be established without delay, calling for the State Supervisory Council to conduct an investigation and for regulations regarding political ethics and the financing of politics to be enacted rapidly.

Among the regulations that Parliament will address in the first stage is the Kızılay (Turkish Red Crescent) draft law. Subsequently, new restrictions on tobacco use are expected to come to the agenda. The draft envisions banning the sale of tobacco products to those born in 2015 and later, and creating designated smoking areas in the gardens of public institutions.

Another item on the legislative calendar is the 13th Judicial Package. The draft includes regulations such as the abolition of the indefinite alimony practice, making the duration of alimony proportional to the duration of the marriage, and separating divorce cases from custody, alimony, and property division cases.
