YENİ Party's Ümit Özlale on the fund investigation: Taha Çakmak's resignation alone is not enough

YENİ Party İzmir MP Ümit Özlale, in his new statement regarding the fund investigation, drew attention to the resignation of Türkiye Sigorta General Manager Taha Çakmak, which has been reflected in the public eye. Özlale argued that the resignation shows only a portion of the connections that need to be discussed in the file.

In his statement, Özlale said, "Taha Çakmak, whose resignation has been reflected in the public eye, is only one link in a large network of relationships that needs to be clarified." Stating that the process cannot be seen as limited to one person leaving their post, Özlale said that issues such as the direction of funds, the approval of investment decisions, and whether potential warnings were taken into account must be examined.

ÖZLALE: THE NETWORK OF RELATIONSHIPS MUST BE INVESTIGATED

In a post on his social media account, Özlale recalled that Çakmak previously served as deputy governor during the period when Şahap Kavcıoğlu was the governor of the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey (TCMB), and also touched upon former TCMB Deputy Governor Erkan Kilimci, who was arrested as part of the fund investigation. Özlale stated that it should be investigated in which institutions the names who served in public financial management during different periods later intersected.

Özlale argued that the connections of the circle, which also includes the name of former deputy minister Bülent Aksu, to the Berat Albayrak era must be clarified. Pointing to Erişah Arıcan being the Chairperson of the Board of Directors of Borsa İstanbul and Deputy Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Turkey Wealth Fund, Özlale requested an examination of the professional relationships surrounding Türkiye Sigorta, Borsa İstanbul, and certain financial institutions.

Bringing up allegations regarding Türkiye Sigorta's investment decisions, Özlale said that claims that the company made high-amount investments in the funds and stocks subject to the investigation with the premiums it collected should be investigated. He reminded that the main shareholder of Türkiye Sigorta is TVF Finansal Yatırımlar AŞ, which holds 76.1 percent of the capital; and the remaining share is traded on Borsa İstanbul.

Stating that risks may also arise on the private sector bond side, Özlale expressed that allegations regarding Adil Varlık Yönetim AŞ, bond issuances, the places where issuance proceeds are used, and credit rating processes should be evaluated together. In the examples he gave through JCR Eurasia and some executives, he stated that the extent to which credit ratings reflect the true payment capacity of companies should be questioned.

In his statement, touching upon the audit, surveillance, internal control, and risk management processes at Borsa İstanbul, Özlale said that it should be revealed which warnings the relevant units prepared, to whom these warnings were conveyed, and what decisions were taken by the management.

Özlale also called on the economic management, requesting that the problem in the funds be examined before it spreads to the bond market. The YENİ Party deputy said, "The reckoning cannot be limited to one person's resignation; those who directed the money, those who approved the decisions, and those who ignored the warnings must all be brought to light."
