Appeal against journalist Furkan Karabay's detention rejected on the same day

The appeal against the detention of journalist Furkan Karabay, who was arrested on charges of "insulting the President" and "targeting those involved in the fight against terrorism" based on a video he prepared for YouTube and his social media posts, was rejected on the same day.

Karabay's lawyer, Enes Ermaner, stated in a post on his X account that the appeal request was reviewed at lightning speed by the Duty Court of First Instance and rejected within the same day.

NO CONCRETE BASIS IN THE REJECTION OF THE APPEAL

The decision written by the duty court, which rejected the appeal and ruled for the continuation of detention, contained only the following statements:

"As a result of our court's examination of the appeal petition and the file containing the decision subject to the appeal; it has been concluded that the decision subject to the appeal and its grounds are in accordance with procedure and law, that there is no inaccuracy in the decision, and that the appeal is therefore not well-founded, thus it has been deemed necessary to decide as follows regarding the rejection of the appeal."

"UNJUST AND UNLAWFUL DECISION"

Ermaner continued with the following statements:

"As you can see in the decision, the ruling, which must be reasoned in accordance with both the Constitution and the Criminal Procedure Code, contains no grounds regarding the concrete file other than stereotypical justifications. We do not accept this unjust and unlawful decision, which was given by a judge who does not even possess the awareness that the appeal being reviewed is not just a piece of paperwork, but concerns the freedom of a journalist."

KARABAY: WE ARE RIGHT, JOURNALISM WILL WIN

In a statement made via his X account, Karabay said, "Our appeal against the detention was rejected on the same day. They can reject it in 1 minute if they want, or keep us imprisoned for months for a non-existent crime. We are on the right side. We are doing our job, we are practicing journalism, and we will continue to do so. Because we are right, journalism will win."
