Dilek Kaya İmamoğlu, wife of the detained Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor and presidential candidate Ekrem İmamoğlu, made a statement on her social media account regarding the appointment of a trustee to Halk TV.
İmamoğlu stated that the police raid on Halk TV early in the morning, the appointment of a trustee to the channel, and the suspension of its broadcasts are unacceptable. In her statement, she noted that journalists are being arrested, television screens are being blacked out, and media organizations are being subjected to interference.
Pointing out that the intervention occurred on the day Ekrem İmamoğlu’s defense was set to begin in one of Turkey’s significant political trials, Dilek Kaya İmamoğlu argued that the public's right to learn the truth directly is being obstructed.
The public's right to receive news cannot be obstructed! Press freedom cannot be surrendered to pressure and arbitrary interventions. You cannot silence the truth, you cannot black out the voice of the people! We stand with all media workers serving at Halk TV.
İmamoğlu’s statement was made at a time when debates over press freedom and the right to receive news have returned to the agenda following the decision regarding Halk TV.
