Reactions continue following the police raid on Halk TV's building in Istanbul, the suspension of the channel's broadcast, and the appointment of a trustee. In their statements, left-wing parties and democratic mass organizations evaluated the intervention as a move against press freedom and the public's right to receive information.
The Left Party (SOL Parti), the Workers' Party of Turkey (TİP), the Labour Party (EMEP), the Communist Party of Turkey (TKP), the People's Liberation Party (HKP), the Confederation of Public Employees' Unions (KESK), and the Human Rights Association (İHD) issued messages of solidarity with Halk TV employees.
The statements also drew attention to the fact that the operation took place on the same day that Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu was set to present his defense in the IMM case. The organizations argued that the government is increasing pressure on opposition media and social opposition.
EMPHASIS ON PRESS FREEDOM AND THE RIGHT TO INFORMATION
The Left Party (SOL Parti) stated that they stand in solidarity with Halk TV, declaring, "Today is a day for solidarity, unity, and struggle." The party characterized the intervention as a move aimed at narrowing the spaces for opposition.
TİP evaluated the appointment of a trustee and the forced entry into the building by police as an "attempt to blockade the media." The statement noted that the pressure on journalists targets the public's right to information, adding, "We will continue our struggle for a free press."
EMEP Chairperson Seyit Aslan pointed to the timing of the operation, arguing that the government is stifling press freedom and usurping the public's right to information. Aslan also recalled previous practices such as the appointment of a trustee to Tele 1, the closure of T24, and the imposition of access bans on the social media accounts of various media outlets.
The TKP interpreted the appointment of a trustee to Halk TV not merely as an intervention in the media sphere, but as a result of the government's impasse in domestic and foreign policy. The party's statement included the words, "Neither your mechanisms of pressure and censorship nor the media empire you have created by your side will be enough to silence society."
While the HKP announced that it stands with Halk TV workers, KESK argued that these interventions are not independent of one another and are part of a policy aimed at silencing social opposition.
In its statement, the İHD also drew attention to the relationship between press freedom and democratization. The association stated that silencing critical voices undermines the credibility of the will for democratization, noting that the timing of the operation is "thought-provoking."
