TGC reacts to attacks on journalists: Interference with press freedom is unacceptable

The Board of Directors of the Journalists Association of Turkey (TGC) has reacted to the interference against journalists during the tensions that occurred at meetings held following the announcement of the absolute nullity decision regarding the CHP's party congress case.

In its statement, the TGC noted that journalists being subjected to physical or verbal attacks while covering news is not only a violation of individual rights but also constitutes an interference with the public's right to information and press freedom.

Freedom of the press and freedom of expression are among the fundamental pillars of a democratic state governed by the rule of law. Regardless of the institution they work for, their editorial policies, or their worldviews, respecting the professional activities of journalists and ensuring their safety is a shared democratic responsibility.

— Journalists Association of Turkey

The Association emphasized that pressure, threats, obstruction, and attempts at violence against media members covering news are unacceptable. The statement called on political parties, administrators, members, and supporters to show the necessary sensitivity to ensure that journalists can perform their duties freely.

The TGC stated that it condemns all forms of violence, pressure, and attempts to obstruct journalists, noting that protecting freedom of the press and expression means protecting the democratic future of society.
