Uğur Mumcu commemorated in Ankara: Large number of people attended the ceremony

Uğur Mumcu, one of the most important figures in the Turkish press and considered a symbol of investigative journalism, is being commemorated on the 33rd anniversary of his assassination in 1993. Mumcu, who lost his life at the age of 50, was killed 33 years ago in a bomb attack placed in his car in front of his home in Ankara.

COMMEMORATION CEREMONY HELD TODAY

On the 33rd anniversary of Uğur Mumcu's assassination, a commemoration ceremony was held at 12:30 PM at the monument located in front of his home in Ankara. The ceremony took place with the participation of Mumcu's family and loved ones, as well as figures from the political world.

NAMES WHO ATTENDED THE CEREMONY

Important figures such as Republican People's Party (CHP) Chairman Özgür Özel and Ankara Metropolitan Municipality (ABB) Mayor Mansur Yavaş also attended the commemoration ceremony. During the ceremony, a moment of silence was held for Uğur Mumcu's life and journalism, and speeches were delivered.

CHP leader Özel made statements following the commemoration event. Özel said, "We are on the anniversary of a 33-year-old unending pain, a fire that does not go out in our hearts. We commemorated him once again by bowing before his memory in the street where Uğur Mumcu was murdered, feeling the pain of a candle that never goes out in our hearts. The same date is also the anniversary of the death of Gaffar Okkan; it is also the anniversary of the death of İsmail Cem. I wish God's mercy upon all three of them."

"A WALL IS BUILT BEFORE US FROM THE BRICKS THAT WERE NOT REMOVED"

In his statement, Özel said, "The Uğur Mumcu murder is one of the darkest pages in Turkey's political history. It seemed as if a part of it was being uncovered, but as the ministers of the most widespread era put it, 'If we pull one brick, the whole wall will collapse.' A wall is still built before us from those bricks that were not removed.

Unfortunately, during this government's term, not only has no one intended to remove these bricks, but new walls have been built. We hope to be here one day, during a government where all these walls are demolished, all those bricks are smashed to pieces, and before the cherished memory of Uğur Mumcu, both all dark events of the past are illuminated and such dark events and black orders do not continue from now on. For that, we continue to work with all our might. I am now heading from here to Yalova, to our protest there."
