New rules coming for driver's license renewal: Inspections are tightening

New practices that will affect millions of drivers across Turkey are preparing to come into effect. The aim is to more closely monitor both the health and driving proficiency of drivers, especially those of advanced age. With the new regulations introduced, significant changes will take place in the driver's license renewal processes.

Citizens over the age of 65 will be required to renew their licenses by obtaining a health report every three years. For those over 80, this period has been reduced to two years. Thus, both health checks and the frequency of document renewal have been increased for elderly drivers.

NEW AGE LIMITS FOR COMMERCIAL VEHICLE DRIVERS

Updates to the Road Transport Regulation have introduced new age and proficiency rules for those who will get behind the wheel in commercial transport. While the rule that drivers of large buses must be at least 26 years old remains in effect, those driving for commercial purposes will be required not to have completed their 66th year.

With a temporary decision taken by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure in December 2023, this upper age limit had been raised to 69 during a period when the need for drivers increased. The duration of the practice had also been extended for a while due to the increased logistics movement after the pandemic and the earthquakes on February 6. It was announced that during the temporary period, it would not be possible for those who have completed 68 years and reached 69 years of age to drive commercial vehicles.

With the new regulation, it has also become mandatory for commercial vehicle drivers to possess professional competence certificates. In this way, it is aimed to increase both public safety and road safety.

Drivers over the age of 65 will be required to renew their licenses by obtaining a health report every three years, and drivers over the age of 80 every two years. The regulation in question is considered an important step in ensuring the safety of both elderly drivers and other road users.

Additional explanations regarding the details of the implementation are expected to be made by the relevant institutions in the coming days. Citizens have been warned to undergo health checks and renew their licenses on time to avoid any grievances.
