New standard for fruit juices: Completely banned

The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has opened a new draft communiqué, which changes the standards to be applied in the production of fruit juice and fruit nectar, for the review of industry representatives. The regulation, prepared to align with European Union legislation, aims to initiate a new era in terms of product content and labeling.

According to the draft, the use of sweeteners will not be permitted in products in the fruit juice category, including fruit juices in concentrate, puree, and powder form. Thus, the use of sweeteners in fruit juices will be completely banned.

A different framework is envisioned for fruit nectars. Sweeteners may be used instead of sugar in nectars that do not contain added sugar. In products in the low-energy nectar category, it will also be possible to replace a certain portion of the sugar with sweeteners.

Another notable point in the draft is fruit juices with reduced natural sugar. It will become possible to produce and market fruit juices whose natural sugar content has been reduced by at least 30 percent through special production techniques.

The Ministry states that the regulation was prepared with the aim of ensuring consumers are accurately informed, increasing product quality, and clarifying standards in the market. The draft is expected to enter into force in its final form following the consultation process.
