AI intervention in the human mind: Artificial intelligence can implant false memories

It has been suggested that artificial intelligence tools can implant false memories into human memory. Researchers from MIT and the University of California, Irvine, examined whether images edited by AI affect memory. In a study conducted with 200 participants, it was observed that AI-supported images significantly increased false memories.

AI intervention in the human mind: Artificial intelligence can implant false memories

It has been suggested that artificial intelligence can implant false memories into human memory.

It is known that AI tools, which have become increasingly widespread in recent years, sometimes provide misleading information or produce "hallucinations".

Some recent studies have noted that they can also cause humans to experience hallucinations.

According to a report in Independent Türkçe, researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the University of California, Irvine, tested whether images altered by artificial intelligence affect human memory.

In the study, which has not yet undergone peer review and was published last week on the preprint server arXiv, 200 participants were shown a series of images.

The participants were then divided into 4 groups and presented with the same images, AI-edited versions of the images, videos produced by AI, or videos containing AI-edited images.

FALSE MEMORIES INCREASE TO A 'SIGNIFICANT' DEGREE

Participants were then asked to describe certain details from the original images.

The researchers observed that images edited by artificial intelligence increased the participants' false memories to a significant degree.

It was also noted that videos containing AI-edited images had the greatest impact on creating false memories. The rate of false memory formation in this group was 2.05 times that of the control group.

The participants in this group also had the highest level of confidence that they remembered the images correctly compared to the others.

The same research team found last month that AI chatbots could create false memories.

The researchers argue that AI interactions can have a significant impact on human memory and that such technological tools should be used with caution in sensitive contexts.
