Artificial intelligence completes complex chemical reaction experiment
Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University in the U.S. have designed a semi-autonomous system they call "Coscientist" to test the competence of artificial intelligence in chemical applications. The created system successfully completed the experiment.
U.S. scientists reported that the semi-automated, AI-controlled system they established learned a complex chemical reaction, created the experimental setup to produce the most efficient results, and successfully executed the experiment in question.
In this context, the scientists provided the large language model, based on the "GPT-4" model developed by ChatGPT, with access to written documents and the internet for use in the research. Coscientist was equipped with robotic tools to manage the experiment semi-autonomously.
The scientists did not participate in the research, decision-making, planning, or execution processes of Coscientist, to which they taught the controls of the robotic tools and the criteria necessary to access accurate information. The researchers noted that only the tubes and petri dishes were placed by hand during the experiment.
ATTENTION DRAWN TO ETHICAL AND RESPONSIBLE USE
The researchers reported that Coscientist created an experimental setup using the provided chemicals to produce the desired reactions in the most efficient process in less than 4 minutes.
The scientists underscored that Coscientist successfully used the "palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling in organic synthesis" technique, which was discovered by Richard F. Heck, Ei-ichi Negishi, and Akira Suzuki, and for which they won the 2010 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
Stating that Coscientist yielded successful results in planning chemical syntheses of known compounds using open sources, controlling robotic tools, and executing various processes simultaneously in the most efficient manner, the scientists emphasized the importance of using artificial intelligence and automation systems ethically and responsibly.
The results and details of the research were published in the journal "Nature".
