Automotive sales hit a record in 2023
In Turkey, sales of automobiles and light commercial vehicles increased by 57.4 percent last year compared to 2022, reaching a record 1 million 232 thousand 635 units.
The Automotive Distributors and Mobility Association (ODMD) 2023 automotive market data was announced at the ODMD Gladiator Awards Ceremony held in Istanbul.
According to the data, the total market for automobiles and light commercial vehicles in Turkey grew by 57.4 percent on an annual basis in 2023. Thus, for the first time in the sector, the 1 million mark was exceeded, with 1 million 232 thousand 635 sales recorded. The previous highest sales figure was 983 thousand 720 units in 2016.
Automobile sales increased by 63.2 percent in the January-December 2023 period compared to the same period of the previous year, reaching 967 thousand 341 units, while light commercial vehicle sales increased by 39.2 percent to 265 thousand 294 units.
DECEMBER SALES
Looking at the December figures, automotive sales increased by 37.7 percent last year compared to 2022, reaching 158 thousand 653 units.
December automobile sales increased by 45.7 percent compared to 2022, reaching 126 thousand 416 units, while light commercial vehicle sales increased by 13.3 percent to 32 thousand 237 units.
10-YEAR AVERAGE SALES
The automobile and light commercial vehicle market also grew by 36.7 percent compared to the 10-year average for December. This figure showed an increase of 44.3 percent in automobile sales and 13.1 percent in light commercial vehicle sales.
When the automobile market is evaluated by segment, 89 percent of the market consisted of vehicles in the A, B, and C segments, which have lower tax rates. Looking at body types, the most preferred body type was SUV automobiles. SUV automobiles were followed by sedan and hatchback vehicles.
When looking at automobile sales by engine type, gasoline-powered automobile sales took a 66.8 percent share with 646 thousand 385 units. While diesel automobile sales had a 13.8 percent share with 133 thousand 374 units, the share of autogas-powered automobile sales was 1.1 percent with 10 thousand 599 units.
Hybrid automobiles took a 10.8 percent share of the market with 104 thousand 804 units, while electric automobile sales reached a 7.5 percent share with 72 thousand 179 units.
TOGG IN FIRST PLACE
Looking at the sales figures of brands, Togg delivered 6 thousand 11 units last month, and a total of 19 thousand 583 T10X models to users from May 2023, when it started sales, until the end of 2023.
Thus, while Togg took the lead in electric automobile sales, it was followed by Tesla with 12 thousand 150 sales. In the ODMD report, it was noted that the data for the Tesla brand was determined as an estimate in light of public statements.
