Bad news for TikTok from Biden

Biden responded to questions from members of the press regarding the US House Energy and Commerce Committee's approval of a bill that could pave the way for a ban on TikTok.

President Biden said, "If Congress passes the bill, I will sign it."

Under the bill approved by the US House Energy and Commerce Committee on March 7, Beijing-based ByteDance is required to divest its TikTok shares within 180 days, or the app faces a ban in the country.

"NEEDS ADJUSTMENT"

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre had noted that the bill regarding the ban on access to TikTok, for which the White House provided technical support in its drafting, "needs adjustment" to reach a point where Biden would sign it.

Despite his administration's argument that TikTok poses a threat to national security, Biden's 2024 presidential election campaign, scheduled for November 5, is also being conducted via TikTok by his team.

Following the Committee's approval of the bill, former US President Donald Trump stated in a post on his social media platform Truth Social that if a ban were imposed, TikTok's competitors, such as Facebook, would become stronger. During his presidency, Trump had issued an executive order to ban the WeChat and TikTok apps, but later revoked the decision.
