Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has warned that the unchecked development of artificial intelligence could lead to serious security risks. In a segment shared from his upcoming interview on NBC's Meet the Press, Gates said that the use of the latest AI tools by malicious actors could have large-scale consequences.
Gates stated that AI could become "powerful enough to trigger events that lead to one billion deaths," emphasizing that the risks in this field cannot be left solely to the internal oversight of technology companies.
Debates regarding the misuse of AI have intensified alongside the rapid development of the technology. Gates' remarks come at a time when warnings within the industry about the existential risks and safety measures of AI are on the rise.
SELF-REGULATION IS NOT SEEN AS SUFFICIENT
Gates expressed that one should not rely solely on the internal security mechanisms of companies in the field of AI. Stating that public authorities must intervene regarding security standards and monitoring methods, Gates noted that it has become mandatory for law enforcement and politicians to be involved in the discussion.
Similar concerns have been raised in the tech world before. After leaving the company, Anthropic employee Jacob Coxon accused Anthropic and OpenAI of "gambling with our lives by racing toward super-intelligent AI." Another Anthropic employee had stated their belief that there is more than a 10 percent chance that AI could lead to the total extinction of humanity within the next 10 years.
While Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei is among those advocating for a slowdown in the AI development process, prominent figures in the tech world such as OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Elon Musk have also made statements drawing attention to the security risks of AI.
In a previously written article, Gates had also noted that advanced AI tools could be used in cyberattacks, fraud, and disinformation activities. According to Gates, hospitals, financial institutions, power grids, and government systems could also become targets of such attacks.
With his latest statements, Gates has joined those who argue that AI should be handled more strictly, not only in terms of economic and technological opportunities but also in terms of security and public order.
