Bill Gates: "Everyone will have a 'personal assistant' within five years"

Artificial intelligence is poised to change the way we use computers forever, or at least that is what Gates thinks.

In a blog post he wrote on Thursday, Gates shared some of his predictions for the future as AI becomes increasingly widespread.

According to Gates, within the next five years, you will no longer have to use different applications to manage your tasks, whether you are in the office or out and about. Instead, you will tell your phone or computer what you want to do, and it will be able to carry out your request.

Gates says, "In the near future, everyone will be able to have a personal assistant powered by artificial intelligence that is far beyond today's technology."

They will bring about the greatest revolution

Gates refers to software that can perform tasks you assign based on information about you as an 'agent': "Agents will not only change how everyone interacts with computers. They will also turn the software industry upside down and bring about the biggest revolution in computing since we moved from typing commands to tapping on icons."

The more agents know about you, the more they can anticipate your needs and assist you with whatever you want: "They can make suggestions before you even ask. They improve over time because they remember your activities and notice the intent and patterns in your behavior. Based on this information, they offer to provide what they think you need, but you will always make the final decisions."
