Call for urgent action on the economic impacts of artificial intelligence

More than 200 individuals, including economists, artificial intelligence researchers, and public policy experts, have called on governments to be prepared for the economic impacts of artificial intelligence. The experts, who include 15 Nobel Prize-winning academics and researchers from US-based companies such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google, signed an open letter arguing that artificial intelligence could transform labor markets, productivity, and income distribution faster than previous technological revolutions.

The statement regarding the matter warned that while artificial intelligence could provide significant economic benefits, these gains might not be shared equally if governments do not develop policies that support workers, education, and social cohesion.

The experts stated that early planning is critical to maximizing opportunities while limiting potential negative impacts, noting that societies must invest in workforce training, modern education systems, and updated social policies to adapt to rapid technological transformation.

The statement called for more comprehensive research into the economic impacts of artificial intelligence and for the beginning of the creation of policies and institutions that will ensure the technology benefits society. The experts emphasized the need to address risks such as widespread job losses.

"Waiting for certainty means being too late"

Anton Korinek, a professor at the University of Virginia in the US who joined Anthropic's economic research team in March, said in a statement regarding the situation, "The steam engine, electricity, and computers gave societies decades to adapt. Artificial intelligence may give us only a few years. We cannot improvise our strategy and institutions in the middle of the transformation; waiting for certainty means being too late."

The call comes at a time when many countries around the world are accelerating their investments in artificial intelligence while simultaneously debating how to regulate the technology. Analysts note that the global agenda is now beginning to focus not only on the safety of artificial intelligence but also on its economic consequences.
