Camera claim for iPhone 18 Pro: Variable aperture design could change the rear section

A new claim has been added to the rumors regarding Apple's upcoming Pro models. According to recent leaks, both the sensor size and lens structure of the main camera could change in the iPhone 18 Pro series. The most notable headline is the claim that the long-discussed variable aperture system could be used in this series.

According to the claim, Apple may incorporate a new 48-megapixel sensor with a size of 1/1.12 inches in the main camera. Current Pro iPhone models use a fixed f/1.78 aperture. If a switch to a variable aperture is made, the lens opening could be physically adjusted, which means more flexible shooting capabilities in different lighting conditions.

Such a system is expected to provide more control over depth of field in bright environments and help more natural light reach the sensor in low-light conditions. It is stated that when used in conjunction with a larger sensor, more natural results could be achieved in portrait shots and background separation.

However, this change could affect not only photo quality but also the phone's rear design. The mechanical aperture structure and the larger sensor could make the internal layout of the camera module more complex. For this reason, it is stated that differences could be seen in the camera bump and lens placement of the iPhone 18 Pro.

The cost claim from the supply chain is also noteworthy. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the new lens system with a variable aperture could cost Apple approximately 50 percent more compared to the current solution. Whether this will be reflected in the final product price remains uncertain for now.

The information in question has not yet been confirmed by Apple. However, if the claims turn out to be true, the company could support the camera experience it has strengthened with software-assisted photography in recent years with a more significant hardware update in the iPhone 18 Pro series.
