Canada bans the use of WeChat and Kaspersky applications

According to a report by CTV News, Canadian Treasury Board President Anita Anand announced that the use of the Chinese social media app WeChat and applications belonging to the Russian cybersecurity company Kaspersky has been banned on government-issued mobile devices.

The statement included the following: "The Government of Canada is constantly working to protect our information systems and networks to ensure the privacy and protection of government information. We will continue to monitor potential cyber threats regularly and take immediate action when necessary."

The statement noted that as a result of reviews, it was decided that the applications in question pose an "unacceptable level of risk" in terms of privacy and security, and it was recorded that the data collection methods of the WeChat and Kaspersky applications provide "significant" access to the contents of mobile devices.

The statement, which conveyed that these two applications will be removed from government-issued mobile devices, also provided information that downloading them again to the devices will be blocked.

On the other hand, it was also mentioned that there is no evidence that the applications in question have compromised government information.

The statement clarified that the decision applies only to government-issued mobile devices and that citizens may continue to use them.
