Developed ultra-thin and transparent solar cells are opening the doors to a new energy era by making it possible for many surfaces, from skyscrapers to vehicle windows, to generate electricity in the future.
Researchers in Singapore have achieved an innovation that will revolutionize solar energy technology. Produced 10 thousand times thinner than a human hair, these new-generation solar cells, with their extreme thinness and semi-transparent structures, are preparing the cities of the future to transform into massive energy sources.
This groundbreaking discovery is not limited to rooftop solar panels; it also offers the opportunity to generate electricity on structures where one does not want to compromise on aesthetics, such as glass facades of buildings and automobile surfaces. There will no longer be a need for large areas or bulky panels for energy production; a more sustainable future can be built without changing the appearance of living spaces.
HIGH PERFORMANCE IN TRANSPARENCY
The developed perovskite-based solar cells are only 10 nanometers thick. However, this thinness does not lead to a compromise in performance. While efficiency reaches 12% in opaque models that are not fully transparent, semi-transparent versions suitable for window glass functions, which allow 41% of light to pass through, convert energy at a rate of 7.6%. These figures are considered among the highest globally for transparent solar cells.
Furthermore, the new cells stand out with their ability to generate electricity not only in direct sunlight but also in indirect and low-intensity urban light. Especially in city centers where tall buildings shade one another, this technology offers a much more efficient energy solution.
ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY TECHNOLOGY IN PRODUCTION
The cells can be successfully produced using the "thermal evaporation" method, which can be applied on an industrial scale. Coating surfaces with materials in ultra-thin films in a vacuum environment both reduces the risk of errors in production and eliminates the dependence on toxic chemicals. In this way, an environmentally friendly process that can quickly transition from laboratory settings to factory production becomes possible.
Increasing carbon emissions and net-zero emission targets worldwide are pushing scientists to seek more innovative and efficient energy solutions. New-generation solar cell technology is also preparing to play a significant role in the fight against energy dependence and the climate crisis.
This discovery, which brings major transformations not only in the volume of energy production but also in the areas where it is applied, is expected to revolutionize many sectors, from glass facades in cityscapes to automobile windows or wearable smart devices.
