Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has issued striking warnings regarding the changes that artificial intelligence will create in society and working life. According to Gates, none of the world's governments are sufficiently prepared for the comprehensive transformation that the technology will cause.
Gates pointed to risks such as the impact of artificial intelligence on employment, its malicious use in attacks, and people becoming dependent on AI-based "friends." Having previously stood out with his optimistic assessments regarding artificial intelligence, Gates this time emphasized that public administrations are not addressing the issue with the necessary depth.
CALL FOR GLOBAL COOPERATION
Stating that he has shared his concerns with world leaders, Gates said he has discussed this issue with US President Donald Trump and his team. Gates announced that he also aims to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping later this year.
Comparing artificial intelligence to an "alien intelligence" arriving on Earth, Gates stated that the US, China, and other countries must act together to prevent potential problems. He drew attention to the importance of international coordination due to the cross-border effects of the technology.
On the other hand, Gates also noted that artificial intelligence is not just about risks. He expressed that with proper management and equal access, this technology could reduce the gap between the richest and the poorest instead of widening it.
According to Gates, artificial intelligence can provide significant contributions in a wide range of areas, from supporting healthcare workers to the discovery of new drugs and vaccines. However, for this potential to turn into social benefit, countries need to accelerate their preparations.
