Digital workers are taking over procurement: The sector is changing in 5 years

According to TÜSAYDER President Meriç Atalay, a radical transformation is on the horizon in the field of procurement and supply chain management. Research by McKinsey indicates that by 2028, 47% of global companies will increasingly incorporate digital workers, namely RPA (robotic process automation) systems, into these processes.

Atalay noted that the usage rate of generative artificial intelligence has reached 71%, stating, “Procurement is one of the areas that has been slowest to adopt this transformation. However, it is no longer possible to remain competitive using traditional methods.” In particular, rising commodity prices and market uncertainties are driving companies toward more agile and digital-focused strategies.

Commodity Prices Are Climbing, Consumer Habits Are Changing

In the January-February 2025 period, coffee prices increased by 18%, sugar by 8%, and lumber, wheat, tin, and gold by 7%. This situation is challenging both suppliers and consumers. While small and frequent purchases are replacing bulk purchases, firms are turning to artificial intelligence solutions for cost optimization.

Up to 20% Reduction in Costs with Artificial Intelligence

According to the latest data from McKinsey, 61% of companies that have integrated artificial intelligence have reduced their supply chain costs by between 10% and 20%. According to Atalay, this situation is leading to tougher negotiation processes, an increase in the search for suppliers, and simplification in product designs.
