Disney to invest $1.5 billion in Epic Games
Walt Disney, one of the entertainment industry's largest companies, has announced it will acquire a $1.5 billion stake in video game developer Epic Games.
In a statement from Disney, it was announced that the two companies will collaborate on a new games and entertainment universe that will further expand the reach of Disney stories and experiences.
The statement reported that Disney will invest $1.5 billion to purchase equity in Epic Games.
The statement noted that a vast and open games and entertainment universe connected to Epic Games' popular video game Fortnite will be created, and that this universe will bring Disney stories and experiences to life alongside Fortnite and its more than 100 million active players and creators.
In his assessment of the investment, Disney CEO Robert Iger stated that this marks Disney's biggest entry into the world of gaming to date and offers significant opportunities for the company's growth.
Epic Games Founder and CEO Tim Sweeney also stated that they are collaborating on something entirely new to build a persistent, open, and interoperable ecosystem that will bring together the Disney and Fortnite communities.
