Epic Games wins lawsuit against Google: What will Google do?

The lawsuit filed by Epic Games against Google over company policies that required all app developers using the Google Play Store to pay a commission of up to 30 percent on sales of digital products or services has concluded.

In the case heard at the Northern District Court of California, the jury reached the verdict that Google violated antitrust laws with the way it operates its app store. Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney shared a post on his X social media account saying, "Victory over Google." Sweeney stated that the jury ruled against the Google Play monopoly in every respect.

Google executive Wilson White said the following regarding the court's decision:

''We plan to challenge the verdict. Android and Google Play provide more choice and flexibility than any other major mobile platform. The trial made it clear that we compete fiercely with Apple and its App Store, as well as app stores on Android devices and gaming consoles. We will continue to defend the Android business model and remain deeply committed to our users, partners, and the broader Android ecosystem.''

IT ALL STARTED IN 2020

The dispute between Google and Epic Games stemmed from an incident in August 2020, when Epic released updates for its game Fortnite that allowed the company to bill its customers directly for in-app purchases instead of using the app stores.

Subsequently, Google and Apple quickly removed Fortnite from their app stores, and Epic Games filed lawsuits against both companies for direct billing and the ability to install the Epic store on smartphones without restrictions.

The lawsuit filed by Epic Games against Apple was heard in 2021 and was appealed earlier this year.
