GIF and image support coming to YouTube comments

YouTube is preparing to take a new step that will change the interaction format in the comments section, which has long been text-heavy. Support for GIF and image comments, which has been tested with limited user groups on the platform for some time, is expected to be made available worldwide as of November 2026.

The new image link field seen in Google's YouTube Data API documentation indicates that comments will no longer consist solely of text and links. With the new system, users will be able to express their reactions in both standard YouTube videos and Shorts content using images they select from a searchable GIF library.

HOW WILL GIF AND IMAGE COMMENTS WORK?

According to information in the developer guides, a YouTube comment will be able to directly contain an image or an animated GIF. These image contents provided via the API will be processed with signed links for security purposes, and these links will expire six hours after they are retrieved.

Details shared at the “Made on YouTube” event indicate that an integrated GIF search engine has been added to the comment box in the mobile app. However, it is not yet clear whether users will be able to upload independent images from their own devices, which provider the GIF library will work with, or which operating systems the feature will be launched on first.

With the new feature, GIFs or images can be used alongside text in comments.

YouTube's September 30 API update notes state that the feature will be launched on a global scale in November 2026 with a phased rollout plan. This schedule is considered part of the platform's goal to make comment interactions more visual and dynamic.

The new feature also brings some question marks regarding content moderation. Existing community guidelines, such as word blocking, user hiding, and holding for review, are expected to remain in effect. However, it remains unclear for now how spam or harmful content containing only images will be distinguished from text-based filters, and whether content creators will be able to disable only GIFs without turning off comments entirely.
