Google updates policy on election advertisements

Google has announced that it will update its policies regarding disclosure requirements for "synthetic content" this month.

Accordingly, advertisers will be required to disclose election advertisements that contain synthetic or digitally altered content and check a box in their campaign settings.

Google will generate an in-ad disclosure based on the checkbox for certain specific formats, while for other formats, advertisers will be responsible for providing the disclosure.

The disclosure must be clear and conspicuous and placed in a location where it is likely to be noticed by users.

Depending on the content of the advertisement, phrases such as "Altered or synthetic content," "This audio was computer-generated," "This image does not depict real events," and "This video content was synthetically generated" may be used in the disclosure.
