Harvard students develop project that reveals personal information using Meta glasses!

Two Harvard students have created a project that instantly reveals people's personal information using Meta's Ray-Ban smart glasses. The demo strikingly demonstrates how existing technologies, such as facial recognition and public databases, can be used in risky ways.

AnhPhu Nguyen and Caine Ardayfio use the live-streaming function of Meta's glasses to Instagram for their technology, called I-XRAY. Artificial intelligence recognizes faces in these streams and retrieves personal information such as names, addresses, and phone numbers from public databases. This data is then transmitted to users via a mobile application.

Security threat from facial recognition technology

In Nguyen and Ardayfio's demo, the students are seen identifying classmates and strangers on public transport through the glasses. While the accuracy of facial recognition technology is known, I-XRAY's combination of this technology with an easily accessible device significantly increases the risk of misuse. The widespread use of face search engines like PimEyes allows such technologies to be accessible to a wider audience.

The students state that they do not plan to use their project for malicious purposes and will not release it. They emphasize that their goal is to draw attention to the dangers of existing technologies. They remind individuals that they should take precautions to make their digital assets less accessible.
