Facing economic difficulties, Intel has announced that it is delaying the opening of the $28 billion chip manufacturing plant it promised to build in Ohio until 2030. The facility, which was initially planned to become operational in 2025, will continue its construction process for at least another 5 years.

Intel delays opening of factory project to 2030: Impact of economic crisis

Intel, which long held the position of industry leader in semiconductor manufacturing, announced in 2022 that it would build two chip manufacturing plants in Ohio with the goal of returning to the top in the US. However, the company's financial difficulties and changes in market conditions have led to the project being delayed first to 2025, and now to 2030.

3.7 BILLION DOLLARS SPENT

Intel stated that they maintain their long-term commitment to the chip manufacturing plant project in Ohio, noting that they have spent 3.7 billion dollars so far. Construction of the factories will be accelerated as market demand increases, and they are planned to become operational in 2030-2031. Additionally, Intel had promised to establish this factory in Ohio to increase semiconductor production, which is critical for national security, by receiving 7.8 billion dollars in funding under the US Federal CHIPS Incentive Program.

ECONOMIC DIFFICULTIES PERSIST

Intel, one of the leading names in the technology world, has faced major economic fluctuations in recent years. In 2024, the company initiated a global restructuring process by laying off 15 thousand employees to reduce costs. Following these developments, Intel's stock shares lost 57 percent of their value.

Although Intel explained the delay of the factory projects in Ohio on the grounds of "adapting to market demands," it is believed that this decision actually stems from financial distress.

Falling behind Samsung, TSMC, and Nvidia in chip production, Intel reported a loss of 18.8 billion dollars in the 2024 fiscal year. The company had made a profit of 1.7 billion dollars in 2023. Following this major shift within a year, Intel decided to cut its spending significantly.
