A long-standing issue in Gmail has been resolved: Usernames can now be changed

Google has removed a long-standing technical limitation by introducing a new feature that allows for username changes in Gmail accounts. Gmail account holders will no longer need to create a new account to change the username part of their email address. With this update, Google will allow name changes while preserving all data from the existing account.

After the change, the existing email address is not completely deleted; instead, it is saved in the system as an "alternative address." This allows users to continue receiving messages sent to their old addresses. Furthermore, according to Google, this process can be performed only once per year and a total of three times. Users who wish to do so can return to their old addresses at any time.

The new feature allows users to continue using their existing accounts without having to move data such as email history, files in Google Drive, or photos to another account. This prevents any loss of important information and documents.

In Google's official announcement, it is stated that the change is currently available to everyone in the US. A detailed schedule regarding when Gmail users in other geographical regions will gain access has not been shared. The feature began rolling out gradually starting at the end of December.

The Gmail username change process can be performed in a few easy steps on active accounts. Users first enter Google Account Settings, select the "Manage your account" option from there. Then, they navigate to the "Personal info" section, open the "Email" part, and can define a new username using the "Change Google account email" button.

Thanks to this development, account holders will be able to make desired changes to their Gmail addresses more flexibly while protecting all their data, as well as the messages they send and receive.
