Researchers from the University of Cambridge, who recorded the brain activity of 50 babies aged 4, 7, and 11 months while they watched a video of a primary school teacher singing 18 different nursery rhymes, used special algorithms to understand how babies encode the songs they hear in their brains.

As a result, the researchers revealed that babies learn language from the rising and falling tones of the rhythm in nursery rhymes and lullabies, while also suggesting that dyslexia and developmental language disorders may be related to rhythm perception rather than difficulties in processing phonetic information derived from the rising and falling tones of rhythm.
Professor Usha Goswami, one of the researchers, emphasized that parents should sing and talk to their babies to help them with language acquisition, stating, "Parents should talk and sing to their babies as much as possible, or use infant-directed speech such as nursery rhymes. This will make a difference in language learning outcomes."
