Microsoft criticizes Apple's App Store changes

Microsoft has joined the companies criticizing the changes Apple has made to the App Store under the European Union's Digital Markets Act. Xbox President Sarah Bond evaluated Apple's actions and expressed her concerns regarding the matter. These criticisms come at a time when the CEOs of Epic Games, Spotify, Firefox, and many other companies have also joined in criticizing Apple's App Store changes.

Apple's new plan, prepared to comply with EU regulations, includes a system that requires apps operating in third-party stores to pay €0.50 for each install after the first 1 million installs. Additionally, Apple will continue to charge a 17 percent commission to developers who use third-party payment systems.

Xbox President Sarah Bond expressed Microsoft's concerns, stating, "Apple's new policy is a step in the wrong direction. We hope they listen to feedback on their proposed plan and work towards a more inclusive future for all." Bond also noted that she currently oversees all of Microsoft's Xbox platform and hardware operations and that they are actively developing their own Xbox mobile store, which is expected to be released this year.

Microsoft's Xbox mobile store aims to be an alternative platform to Apple and Google's mobile game stores. The store is expected to feature popular games, including content from Activision Blizzard.

Along with the criticisms from Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney and other companies like Spotify, who oppose Apple's App Store policies and payment processing, it is stated that the European Union will respond to Apple's changes and intervene if necessary.
