Microsoft is shutting down Skype: The transition to Teams begins

Microsoft has announced that it will terminate the Skype service as of May 5, 2025. The company has decided to replace Skype, which has enabled users to make voice and video calls over the internet for years, with the more innovative and integration-focused Teams platform.

Microsoft officials stated that the main reason behind this move is to focus more on the Teams platform to implement fast and effective innovations. Teams gained popularity during the pandemic as it was able to meet remote work and communication needs. It is estimated that Teams will grow even further with the migration of Skype users.

Users will be able to migrate their data and contacts from Skype to Teams until May 5, 2025. Microsoft also announced that it will provide a comprehensive guide and support to ensure users can navigate this transition process smoothly.

CLOSING ONE OF ITS LARGEST ACQUISITIONS

Skype was launched in 2003 and quickly became a platform that popularized voice and video calling over the internet. Microsoft acquired Skype in 2011 for 8.5 billion dollars, marking its largest acquisition at that time. However, with changing technology and user needs, Microsoft has decided to focus on Teams, a more integrated and multifunctional communication tool.
