New and low-cost method found to turn seawater into drinking water

Scientists have succeeded in converting seawater into drinking water while simultaneously generating renewable energy using an innovative method called "Redox Flow Desalination." Researchers led by Dr. Andre Taylor of the NYU Tandon School of Engineering state that this method they have developed could provide solutions to global problems regarding the depletion of potable water resources and carbon emissions.

The new method processes seawater through reduction-oxidation processes, known as "Redox Flow Desalination," to separate the salt in the water and make the seawater drinkable. This extraordinary method offers the potential to use the extracted sea salt to store renewable energy.

The researchers state that the new method is 20% more effective than existing desalination methods and also significantly reduces energy consumption. Dr. Taylor stated, "By combining energy storage and sustainable solutions, we can not only meet the demand for drinking water but also become leaders in environmental protection and renewable energy integration."

Redox Flow Desalination (RDF) is a scalable system that can be integrated with solar or wind energy. This method has the potential to provide a solution to the drinking water crisis. According to Dr. Taylor, this approach will reduce dependence on traditional power systems and facilitate the transition from carbon-based fossil fuels to renewable energy.

The developed system uses various membranes in the process of desalinating seawater and converting it into drinking water. These membranes separate the salts in the water to obtain clean drinking water. At the same time, the system generates renewable electricity from the materials accumulated during this process.

The research was published in the journal Reports Physical Science.
