New frame generation technology that increases frame rates
AMD is beginning to offer its new frame generation technology, which increases frame rates in many games by up to 100 percent, with its latest driver update.
AMD is adding its own frame generation technology to all DirectX 11 or 12 games to boost frame rates for its Radeon RX 6000, RX 7000, and 700M GPUs. AMD Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF) is now available as part of the company's latest Adrenalin GPU driver, which also includes support for a new AMD Video Upscaling technology.
AMD states that when the company's FidelityFX Super Resolution 2 (FSR 2) feature is enabled, Fluid Motion Frames can increase fps by up to 97 percent at 1080p resolution in some DirectX 11/12 games. The performance boost at 1440p reaches "up to 103 percent on average" in certain games. AMD conducted these tests on the company's newest 329-dollar RX 7600 XT GPU, which it claims is "ready for 1440p."
Similar to Nvidia's DLSS 3, AMD warns that Fluid Motion Frames "may cause additional latency in games." Therefore, it is likely not a feature you would want to enable in competitive shooter games, but enabling AMD's Radeon Anti-Lag feature may help reduce the additional in-game latency. Additionally, for Fluid Motion Frames to work, games must be played in full-screen mode with VSYNC disabled. AMD includes an overlay that informs you of the status of Fluid Motion Frames, and this feature can be toggled on and off with the ALT + SHIFT + G combination.
We will have to wait for further testing by reviewers to see how Fluid Motion Frames affects image quality compared to the company's other technologies like FSR 3.
AMD's latest GPU driver also includes a Video Upscaling feature to improve the image quality of web videos. Similar to Nvidia's RTX Video Super Resolution feature, it supports most DirectX 11 applications and web browsers such as Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome.
