A new move against drone attacks: Autonomous microwave defense system
Developed against the threat of low-cost and swarm drone attacks, the autonomous microwave weapon called Leonidas AGV offers an economical alternative to expensive missile systems and stands out with its ability to neutralize multiple targets simultaneously.
Recently unveiled at the AUSA Global Force Symposium 2026, the Leonidas AGV is considered an innovative step in the field of defense technologies. Designed by the US-based technology company Epirus, this system aims to provide a low-cost and effective solution to the increasing number of drone attacks.
The Leonidas AGV uses a new approach powered by electromagnetic waves to overcome the high costs of traditional missile systems. Thanks to the advanced microwave weapon integrated onto the vehicle, the electronic circuits of enemy drones can be disabled in a short time. The general operating principle of the system is based on disrupting the communication, navigation, and motor systems of targeted drones with electromagnetic energy, rendering them unusable.
One of the biggest advantages of the Leonidas AGV is that it can provide uninterrupted defense as it does not require physical ammunition. Thus, the need for reloading is eliminated, and the system can remain on active duty for a long time. Furthermore, its modular architecture makes it possible to integrate it into different military vehicles and platforms.
Currently in the prototype stage, the Leonidas AGV is being developed in partnership with General Dynamics Land Systems and Kodiak AI. Although this innovative technology, which is still undergoing testing, has not yet been extensively trialed in the field, the developing companies report that they have achieved a high effectiveness rate against multiple drone attacks.
Especially for armies facing low-budget or large numbers of targets, the ammunition-free and continuous defense capability offered by the Leonidas AGV stands out as a significant advantage. Its performance in a real operational environment in the near future is eagerly awaited.
