Notable move from Meta regarding data security: End-to-end encryption is being removed
Meta has decided to remove end-to-end encryption for private messages on Instagram following warnings from law enforcement and child protection groups that private chats make it difficult to protect children online.
End-to-end encryption is a messaging method where only the recipients of the message can read it. This means that neither the platform, the company's servers, nor outside hackers can view the messages or listen to calls.
In an encrypted chat or call, each device has a unique secret key that ensures messages remain secure. When a user sends a message, the device locks it in a way that only the target device can unlock. As the company has stated, this means Meta cannot read the content of these encrypted messages.
The update in the Instagram Help Center stated that end-to-end encryption will no longer be supported after May 8.
The company's encryption plans have faced backlash from various groups, including the British non-profit organization Internet Watch Foundation (IWF), the UK's National Child Protection Taskforce, and the Virtual Global Taskforce, an international alliance consisting of 15 law enforcement agencies.
These institutions state that encryption makes it difficult for police to track child sexual abuse material (CSAM) shared on social media.
