NVIDIA introduces RTX Remix 1.5 to refresh old PC games with smaller file sizes
NVIDIA's RTX Remix 1.5 version aims to make classic PC games with modern graphics take up less space, thanks to RTX IO support and new compression options.
NVIDIA has announced version 1.5 of its RTX Remix platform, designed for gamers and mod developers looking to revamp classic PC games with current graphics technologies. The focus of the new version is to make file sizes more manageable while adding modern visual features like ray tracing to older titles.
RTX Remix stands out as a toolkit used primarily for refreshing old PC games through modding. The platform allows for the integration of current visual technologies such as ray tracing, advanced materials, and high-quality textures into classic productions.
RTX IO AND COMPRESSION SUPPORT TAKE CENTER STAGE
One of the most notable new features in RTX Remix 1.5 is the addition of NVIDIA's storage-focused solution, RTX IO, to the platform. This technology helps keep in-game assets streaming faster while aiming for more efficient use of system resources compared to traditional methods.
With the new version, developers and gamers can choose from different compression presets. According to information provided in the source, these presets range from 1 GB to 16 GB. This allows the download and installation sizes of mod projects containing modern textures and advanced lighting to be reduced to lower levels.
The reduction in file sizes in the examples provided by NVIDIA is striking. It was stated that in the ray-tracing-supported version of Portal, the file size dropped from 25 GB to 17 GB, which corresponds to a reduction of approximately 32 percent. In the Half-Life 2 RTX demo, it was reported that the size could be reduced from the 80 GB level down to 50 GB.

These improvements become particularly important in old game refreshes that use high-resolution textures and modern lighting effects. Smaller installation sizes can simplify the process for both users with limited storage space and developers distributing large mod packages.
