OpenAI sets date for GPT-5.6 family: Sol, Terra, and Luna models to be released
OpenAI has announced that the Sol, Terra, and Luna models in the GPT-5.6 family will be globally accessible starting July 9.
OpenAI has set a date for the global release of the GPT-5.6 model family. According to an announcement on the company's official X account, the new models named Sol, Terra, and Luna will meet users on Thursday, July 9.

The new family consists of three models positioned according to different needs. While Sol is highlighted for more challenging technical tasks, Terra is introduced as an option for daily workflows, and Luna is presented for speed and cost-focused use cases.
THREE DIFFERENT MODELS
Sol, positioned as the flagship of the family, is stated to be designed for advanced coding and cybersecurity tasks. This model includes special reasoning modes called "Max" and "Ultra" for complex operations.

Terra is presented as the model that strikes a balance between speed and intelligence, recommended for routine tasks and daily workflows. Luna, as the fastest and most economical option in the series, appeals to projects with budget and performance sensitivities.

The GPT-5.6 family was first introduced on June 26. However, due to a "security review" request by the US government, access to the models was initially limited to only 20 partners.
The source report stated that approval for the global launch was granted after the bureaucratic process was overcome. It was noted that a similar review process had recently come to the agenda for Anthropic's Claude models as well.
