New details have emerged regarding the development process for GTA 6, which the gaming world has been eagerly awaiting for a long time. According to information shared by Bloomberg writer Jason Schreier following his visit to Rockstar North, preparations for the game's map began long before full-scale production.
Although it is known that the comprehensive production process for GTA 6 gained momentum around 2018, it is stated that map planning has been underway for at least 11 years. Accordingly, a small team of artists within Rockstar began shaping the game's open-world design with field research conducted in Miami in 2015.

According to reports, the goal was to build a world that is approximately twice the size of GTA 5, and more dense, alive, and open to interaction. It was stated that even though Rockstar later shifted its focus to the Red Dead Redemption 2 project, the core team continued preliminary work on the GTA 6 map without interruption.
NARROW ROADS CHANGED THE DESIGN
Statements from Rockstar North Co-Head and Art Director Aaron Garbut also point to a notable preference in city design. Garbut confirmed that the roads in GTA 6 were planned to be narrower compared to GTA 5. It is stated that this decision aims to move away from the feeling of wide racing tracks and create a more realistic city texture.
However, narrow roads did not only affect traffic flow. The more congested street structure required the surrounding spaces to be filled with more buildings, details, and environmental elements. Garbut summarized this effect by saying, "All these decisions come back to haunt you later."

These details show why the map design of GTA 6 has become a comprehensive project spanning many years. It is understood that Rockstar is aiming for a more realistic open-world experience compared to previous games in the series with denser traffic, narrow streets, and detailed environmental design.
