86-year-old physics professor is sending his DNA to the Moon
Kenneth Ohm, an 86-year-old who describes himself as a free-spirited physics professor, has asked a space company to place his DNA on the Moon's south pole.
Texas-based space company Celestis has been launching the cremated remains of the deceased into orbit for many years.
The relatives of the deceased and those who include this in their wills have various reasons for wanting to find peace in orbit. However, the space company will be taking the DNA of a living person to the Moon for the first time.
According to a report by Independent Türkçe, 86-year-old Kenneth Ohm, who describes himself as a free-spirited physics professor, has asked the space company to place his DNA on the Moon's south pole.
HE WANTS IT PLACED IN AN INTERGALACTIC ZOO
Ohm hopes that extraterrestrial civilizations exploring the Solar System in the future will find this DNA, reconstruct it, and perhaps even create a "herd of Ohms" from it to place in an intergalactic "zoo."
Geneticists are currently working to bring extinct species back to life by reconstructing ancient DNA obtained through paleontological studies.
The most well-known efforts involve bringing mammoths, which have become symbols of the Ice Age, back to life. Ohm dreams that a similar effort will be made with his own DNA in the future.
Celestis launched its first capsule carrying the ashes of the deceased to the Moon alongside NASA's 1998 research mission. The capsule carried the remains of the famous planetary geologist Eugene Shoemaker.
The "space funeral" company does not yet have a newly determined flight date.
On the company's website, it states, "Celestis memorial capsules carrying ashes and DNA will remain on the lunar surface as a tribute to the brave souls who never stopped striving to reach the stars."
