According to a BBC report, research conducted by scientists at Kew Gardens indicates that at least three-quarters of the species discovered in various parts of the world—ranging from rocks in Antarctica to the peaks of volcanoes—are in need of conservation.

Senior researcher and research leader Dr. Martin Cheek stated that naming these organisms is the first step toward protecting the species.

Dr. Raquel Pino-Bodas, a mycologist at Kew Gardens, also noted, "With these discoveries, it is quite possible to find natural solutions to the problems we face today, such as food, medicine, and active ingredients."

Highlights from the 74 plant and 15 fungal species discovered by Kew Gardens in 2023 are listed as follows:

- Three new fungal species found in Antarctica

- An orchid discovered on the summit of Mount Nok on Waigeo Island, Indonesia, which lives in volcanic regions

- A palm named "Pinanga subterranea" found on the island of Borneo in Asia that grows underground

- A plant named "Crepidorhopalon droseroides" that is believed to be carnivorous and belongs to the mint family

- Two tree species living under the sands of the Kalahari Desert in Angola, with only their flowers appearing on the surface

- An orchid discovered in Madagascar with transparent and pale-colored flowers

- A fungal species discovered in food waste in South Korea

- A lilac-colored flower found in Thailand

- A plant containing indigo found in South Africa
