Scientists announce: Reefs are being revived with sound waves

The Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS), as part of an experimental research project called 'Reef Song,' is attempting to attract local marine life using sound waves.

As part of studies conducted since 2021 at Ningaloo Reef in Western Australia and the Great Barrier Reef at Lizard Island, speakers emitting sound waves have been placed on the reef floors.

In the research, sound waves produced by healthy reef ecosystems are being used to attract fish and other marine creatures to live on reefs damaged by global warming and human factors.

The study's lead researcher, Rohan Brooker, explained that they are broadcasting sound waves appropriate to the season and ecosystem from these speakers as part of the project.

Brooker stated that with this study, they hope to attract juvenile fish that will bring nutrients and other organic matter to help corals grow and the ecosystem flourish.

Miles Parsons, one of the scientists conducting the research, also noted that a healthy reef ecosystem contains different sound waves, explaining that fish form choruses for activities such as feeding.

Comparing the underwater environment to neighborhoods with different sounds, Parsons said, "A crowded neighborhood indicates a healthy environment."

Parsons also explained that the sounds created by healthy reefs are used by fish to decide whether or not to inhabit an area.

The research is scheduled to conclude in 2025.
