Shocking shift in car reliability: Who is the new leader?

Consumer Reports has released its 2024 brand reliability report, revealing a significant shift in the automotive world. Japanese automotive giant Toyota and its luxury brand Lexus, which have shared the top spot for years, have handed over their leadership to Subaru. Subaru has taken the first place as the most reliable car manufacturer among all brands.

SUBARU RISES TO THE TOP

The research is based on analyses conducted on more than 300,000 vehicles produced between 2000 and 2025. The reliability score is determined based on the average of user satisfaction, safety, expected durability, and road test results. Behind Subaru's success lies a notable reason: the consistent use of existing parts and designs rather than an over-reliance on new technologies.

Steven Elek, program lead for auto data analytics at Consumer Reports, stated that Subaru's use of the same parts across multiple models reduces the likelihood of new problems emerging. Six Subaru models included in the study achieved average or higher reliability scores. However, the low performance of the Subaru Solterra electric vehicle, which was developed in partnership with Toyota, negatively affected the brand's overall score. Furthermore, this was the firm's only electric vehicle on the list.

TOYOTA AND LEXUS SLIP

The study evaluates vehicles out of 100 points by considering twenty different problem areas. While Subaru's average reliability score was 68 out of 100, Lexus received 65 points and Toyota received 62 points. Models such as the Toyota Tacoma, Tundra, and the all-electric bZ4X SUV performed below average.

The lowest reliability scores were received by US-based brands. Jeep (33 points), GMC (33 points), Cadillac (27 points), and Rivian (14 points) received the lowest scores, placing them among the most unreliable car manufacturers. The report also noted that the Ford Mustang received an above-average score, while the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y received average scores.
