Social media giant Reddit takes a step in Turkey

Reddit, one of the largest hubs for digital content sharing, has taken its first step toward incorporation in the Turkish market. According to the company's trade registry records, it has begun operations in Istanbul under the name "Reddit İstanbul Online Platform Hizmetleri Limited Şirketi." Reddit, Inc. is listed as a direct founding partner, and global chief legal officer Benjamin Seong Lee is overseeing the company's management.

AREAS OF ACTIVITY AND CAPITAL STRUCTURE

The 50 thousand TL capital determined for the establishment of Reddit Istanbul focuses the company's main activities on internet advertising, sales and marketing services, and mobile platform development support. Additionally, financing for global operations and administrative consulting are also among the planned activities.

SOCIAL MEDIA LAW AND REPRESENTATION REQUIREMENT

Under the social media law currently in effect in Turkey (Law No. 5651), platforms established abroad are required to appoint a fully authorized representative who is responsible to local administrative and judicial authorities. According to experts, whether the new company opened by Reddit meets this requirement will continue to be examined.

Information shared by the Freedom of Expression Association (İfade Özgürlüğü Derneği) indicates that the new company in Istanbul functions more as a commercial liaison office, and it is unclear whether it fulfills the role of a fully authorized representative. The legal accountability requirements sought by the Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK) will be carefully evaluated alongside the company's capital structure and management model. A final decision is expected in the near future.

In the past, social media companies that did not appoint a representative in Turkey were frequently subject to fines, advertising bans, and bandwidth throttling sanctions. Whether this move by Reddit is a strategy to avoid potential sanctions is a subject of debate in legal circles. Experts point out that appointments made through a corporate entity may not be considered legally sufficient.

ALL EYES ON THE BTK'S DECISION

This first official step by Reddit in Turkey could mark the beginning of a new era regarding the compliance of social media platforms with local legislation. However, the issue of whether full legal representation has been achieved could directly affect the platform's operations in Turkey in the coming period.
